Charles Hubert Brannam - 1881 - Lizard Vase - Brannam Pottery
Important lizard vase from the 19th century, made by Charles Hubert Brannam (1855-1937) in his pottery that was founded by his father Thomas Backway Brannam in 1848 in Barnstaple, his son would join the company in 1867.
In 1881, Charles Hubert would take over the company completely.
This is one of the very rare pieces that was marked at the bottom with ART Pottery, In 1879 he persuaded his father to allow him to produce art ware. Since then, some pieces have also been marked with Art Pottery
So this piece was made in the first year that the company was run entirely by Charles Hubert. Clearly visible are the motifs such as blue thistles that surround the vase and demonstrate the start of the Art Nouveau period.
The combination of colors in the glaze is bold for this period but a great match with the soft and dark green tones that are broken by light blue thistles. It is a playful work, where two snails keep a close eye on the lizard from the handles, the left snail clearly has more eye for the lizard than the right one.
The vase is signed by CH Brannam, dated 1881, the pottery was also mentioned as Brannam Pottery and the North Devon district as N. Devon.
